Over forty players competed in the 2013 Lowry Grand Prix Series with Josh Lewer taking top honors scoring 59 points to finish just ahead of runner up Mike Mayfield who had a points total of 55. The prize battle went down to the final round as Mike had a four point lead heading into round three. The title was settled over the board as Josh was able to claim the win over Mike and pick up the 5 bonus points for clear first to edge out Mike for series Championship! Mike is in Chicago for the Holidays and drove all the way back to Evans, GA to compete in the final round! He is now back in Chicago for New Year's! Thank you for your dedication!! The Third & Fourth place prizes were also decided over the board in the final round between Ben Caiello & Randy Mostellar with Ben scoring the win and moving from fifth to third in final tournament!
Randy Mostellar and Mike Mayfield were the only two players to compete in every round of the LGP. They were both awarded free entry into any South Carolina tournament in 2014!
Twelve players competed in LGP #6 with Ben Caiello taking clear first in the Open Section with a perfect 3-0 score. Josh Lewer won the Amateur Section with a perfect 3-0 score with Mike Mayfield, Mike Boone & Ed Stewart all tying for second with 2 points.

Year End Notes
The club had its final weekly meeting of the year this week with another strong turnout of around twenty players. 2013 was another busy year for the club as it hosted over 20 tournaments ! The club will begin meeting again on Thursday, Jan 9 and the Library Club will be meeting again on Monday, Jan 6.

Caiello wins Ashland XXXV! Mayfield takes Amateur Section!
Eighteen players competed in Ashland XXXV as Ben Caiello (2090) claimed his fourth straight Ashland title! In the Open Section, Paul Potylicki (1566) claimed the point over Daniel Smith (1485) in the section's only final round game.
The Amateur Section had its largest turnout in six months with eight players competing in the final round! Mike Mayfield (1420) scored a last round win over Jordan Anderson (1382) to take clear first with 3.5 points. David Stoner (1477) outlasted Gunateja Guruvelli (1305) to claim the point and share second place with Richard Watts (1216) who made the second to last mistake and secure the point from Venkata Guruvelli (1130). Jared Whiting (1008) picked up the point from Raviteja Guruvelli (1045).
There will only be stress free chess the rest of the year. No membership is required to come out and play casually. The club will be open from 7pm -10pm each Thursday through the end of the year except for Nov 28 and Dec 26. The club also meets for casual play at the St Andrews Regional Library on Mondays from 6:00 - 8:30. Library calendar is HERE.
The Year End Awards will be handed out on Dec 5 around 8:00pm.

Lowry Grand Prix #5
Fourteen players contested the Penultimate Round of the Lowry Grand Prix Series. Series leader Josh Lewer didn't compete this round which opened the door for Mike Mayfield to claim the top spot and he took advantage scoring seven points to take the lead by four points heading into the final round which will be held on Dec 28 in Evans, GA.
In the Open Section, Ben Caiello (2040) & Randy Mosteller (1830) tied for first to stay in the top five with a chance to take the second place prize at the final tournament in December.
The Amateur Section (U1505) was well supported with ten players battling in a very competitive field. Daniel Smith (1449) & David Boyd (1426) settled peacefully in the final round to share first place. New series leader Mike Mayfield & Gunateja Guruvelli (who gained 116 rating points!!) tied for third place a half point back.

Caiello leads Open Section, Mayfield in control of the Amateur Section heading into the Final Round!
An all-time low turnout of six players battled in the Penultimate Round of Ashland XXXV. Ben Caiello (2040) outlasted a hard fighting Paul Potylicki (1534) to continue leading the Open Section heading into the final round next week.

Twelve players compete in Round 1 of Ashland XXXV
Twelve players came out to compete in Round 1 of Ashland XXXV. Ben Caiello (2040 ) took advantage of an opening miscue by Daniel Smith (1449) and successfully defended Board 1. Gil Holmes (1813) was able to convert an opening advantage into a full point claiming the win over Akshat Jindal (1418) and Paul Potylicki (1534) returned to competition scoring a first round win over Akshita Jindal (1308).
In the Amateur Section, Richard Watts (1200) was able to grind out the win over David Stoner (UNR) as Mike Mayfield (1496) took the point from James Doyle (1103 ) and David Boyd (1426) won over Jared Whiting (1036).

Twelve players battle in Ashland Quick XL!
Twelve players formed three quads to contest Ashland Quick XL. Steve Boshears (1710) & Gil Holmes (1563) tied for first with 2.5 points in the Top Quad. The Middle Quad saw Akshita Jindal (1308) score a perfect 3-0 to take clear first with David Stoner (1477) finishing second with 2 points. Daniel Smith (1256) took clear first in the Lower Quad with a perfect 3-0 score as Jordan Anderson (1181) placed second with 2 points.

Not so Casual Night as Caiello wins Ashland Blitz 7!
Around a dozen players came out for some stress free chess but the calm proved to be too much as six players went to battle in Ashland Blitz 7! Ben Caiello (2056) took clear first just a point ahead of Edsel Pena (2053). Ben & Edsel split their match in the double round robin but Edsel was upset by third place finisher Jordan Anderson (1346) to allow Ben to take clear first.

Caiello leads after two rounds! Stoner on top of Amateur Section!
Round 2 of Ashland XXXIV saw ten players crossing swords over the board. Ben Caiello (2056) held down board one scoring the win over Shaun McCoy (1370) to move into clear first with 2 points. Daniel Smith (1465) scored the upset win over Lendel Robinson (1668).
In the Amateur Section, new club member David Stoner (UNR) moved into clear first after taking the point from Jordan Anderson (1346) and improving to 2-0. Mike Mayfield (1409) secured the point over Jaime Sanyer (1204) and Richard Watts (1200) outlasted Jared Whiting (1127).
Round 3 is Thursday, Sept 12. Register/Check in by 7:15, round starts at 7:30.
The Sinquefield Cup starts on Monday, Sept 9. This tournament features the top two players in the world, GM Magnus Carlsen & GM Levon Aronian and the top two players in the U.S., GM Hikaru Nakamura & GM Gata Kamsky. This field should produce some exciting chess and you can follow it all live online.

The Sinquefield Cup starts on Monday, Sept 9. This tournament features the top two players in the world, GM Magnus Carlsen & GM Levon Aronian and the top two players in the U.S., GM Hikaru Nakamura & GM Gata Kamsky. This field should produce some exciting chess and you can follow it all live online.

Ashland XXXIV begins!
Ten players battled in the opening round of Ashland XXXIV. Ben Caiello (2056) successfully defended board 1 from Lendel Robinson (1668) as Gil Holmes (1736) battled a determined Daniel Smith (1465) long into the night before finally securing the point as the clocks were winding down.
In the Amateur Section, Jordan Anderson (1346) took advantage of an opening miscue to take the point from Jared Whiting (1127), Christian Dunlap (1293) took the point from James Doyle (1103) and David Stoner (UNR) scored the win over Richard Watts (1200) in his first rated game.

Lowry Grand Prix #4 in the Books!
Ten players battled in the fourth round of the Lowry Grand Prix Series. John Simmons (2000) & Bob Halliday (1768) tied for first in the Open Section. Randy Mosteller (1839) placed third.
Mike Mayfield (1409) took full advantage of Josh Lewer (1467) playing up a section to post a perfect 3-0 score in the Amateur Section and pick up the maximum points of 15. Mike has closed the sixteen point gap in the Series down to three points with just two rounds to go. Ed Stewart (1204) & Mike Lisenby (UNR) tied for second with 2 points.

Labrecque wins Ashland Quick XXXIX!!
The Columbia Chess Club returned to action with Ashland Quick XXXIX. Chris Labrecque (1565) rolled through the Top Quad posting a perfect 3-0 score! Lendel Robinson (1502) took clear second with 2 points. James Doyle (1084) went undefeated in the Lower Quad taking clear first with 2.5 points splitting the point with Jordan Anderson (1228) in the final round. Jared Whiting (848) finished in clear second with 2 points after bouncing back from a first round defeat.
Round 4 of the Lowry Grand Prix Series is Sat Aug 24 in Evans, Ga. We're expecting a good turnout based on the early entries at the CSRA site. If you can't make the first round at 10:00 join in at 12:30 with a .5 point bye. Come out for some cheap, rated chess!

The Columbia Open Results

National Master Jeffrey Haskel of Boca Raton, FL, managed three wins and two draws to take clear first place in the Open Section of the Columbia Open held at the Hilton Garden Inn in the Harbison area of Columbia, SC. He waded through the tough field with IM Danny Kopec and NM Klaus Pohl to come out on top. Patrick McCartney and Dominique Myers both scored 3.5 points sharing second place.
The U2200 prize had a three way tie with Tim Rankin, Gene Nix, and Sulia Mason all scoring 2.5 points.
The U2000 section created the most drama with the section not decided until the last game of the tournament. Gary Branton Jr pulled out a win, putting him in clear first place with 4.5 points.
Rade Musulin and Kapish Potula shared second place with 4 points each.
Lillian Wanda took the U1800 prize with an impressive 3.5 points.
In the U1600 section, Jayashree Sekar and Columbia Chess Club regular, Andrew Manion, split first place honors and Bob Mahan claimed sole third place.
The U1400 prize went to Sri Uppaluri with 3.5 points.

Akshat Jindal scored the only 5-0 in the tournament giving him first the U1200 section.
Gunateja Guruvelli took sole second place with an impressive 4 points and third place was split between Sudhakar Avirinei, Zach Darga, and Rares Cristian.
The U1000 prize was claimed by Wouter Van De Groep.
Nine states were represented totaling 77 players playing in four sections. This set a record attendance for The Columbia Open. Full results can be seen here.

IM Danny Kopec & The Columbia Open!!
IM Kopec visits the club on Thursday Aug 15! Dr Kopec will give a lecture then play a consult game with IM Alexander Matros. Each Master will be in separate room with a demo board and discuss the moves with the players in the room. This is a great opportunity to find out how an IM thinks during a game and discuss what you would like to play and why it is or isn't the best way to go. Dr Kopec will also have his books & DVDs for sale. Club opens at 7:00pm and this event is open to everyone! Come out and get your head ready for some Chess because....
The 8th Columbia Open is here! The Hilton Garden Inn Harbison is the playing site for the fifth straight year. There are many restaurants and stores in the immediate area so food and entertainment is easily accessible. If you have not registered you can still register at the the club on Thursday and avoid lines on Fri evening or Sat morning. Players from eight states are registered and we expect to have our usual 65-75 players in attendance. The entry list can be found HERE.
Rated play returns next week, Thursday Aug 22 with Ashland Quick XXXIX. This will be our usual Quick Tournament, Game 20 Quads. Entry fee $10 for club members, $15 for non-members. First place each quad $20, Second $15. Quad may become a Swiss based on the number of entries. Round 1 starts at 7:30.

The Columbia Open is only TWO weeks away! You can enter at the club on Thursday evenings or online entry is available and the current entry list can be found HERE .
Although the club is in a dead time for rated play right now, there is a full slate of events for August starting this weekend with the The Charlotte City Championship Aug 3 & 4. The prize fund for this event has been increased to $2,150 thanks to a sponsor! Note that the Round 4 on Sunday does not start until 12:15. This late start makes it possible to commute from Columbia and save the hotel expense if you want.
Next up is a Chess Camp in Chapin for beginning players Aug 5 -8 and the Make a Difference 3 tournament is in Charleston on Aug 10.
An Intermediate Chess Camp for U1500 players is in Chapin Aug 12-15 which is a great chance to get ready for the Columbia Open Aug 16-18.

B Caiello & McCoy perfect in Ashland Quick XXXVIII!!
Ten players battled in Ashland Quick XXXVIII as Ben Caiello (1771) continued his strong play following up a perfect 5-0 in A33 and a perfect 3-0 in LGP3 with a perfect 3-0 in AQ38!! Ben looks to be in good form heading into the Border Battle this weekend! Edsel Pena (2031) took second in the Top Section with 2 points.
The second section turned into a six player swiss and saw Shaun McCoy (1229) take care of business defeating the top three rated players in the group to post a perfect 3-0! Lendel Robinson (1517) fought hard to finish in a tie for second with Dan Caiello (1472).
There will be NO RATED CHESS until after the Columbia Open. Next week, Thursday July 18 will be a Casual Night. There will be NO Meeting on July 25. August 1 & 8 will be Casual Nights. IM Danny Kopec will visit the club on August 15. The next rated tournament will be Ashland Quick XXXIX on August 22.

B Caiello & Lewer Perfect in LGP3!!
Seventeen players battled in the third round of the Lowry Grand Prix as the series reached the halfway point.
Ben Caiello (2031) rolled through the Open Section taking clear first with perfect 3-0 score claiming the maximum 15 points for the round and making a big move towards the top of the standings going from 15th to 3rd.. Ian Morton (1943) took clear second with 2 points as Randy Mosteller (1850) & Steve Boshears (1712) tied for third at 1.5.
The Amateur Section (U1505) & the LGP Series continued to be dominated by Josh Lewer (1487) as he took clear first, scored the maximum 15 points for the second straight round and ran his winning streak in the LGP to a perfect 9-0! Josh's commanding lead in the standings will be tested since he should bump up to the Open Section in Round 4. David Boyd (1456) & Mike Mayfield (1375) tied for second with 2.5.

After four rounds, B Caiello leads the Open, Anderson leads the Amateur!

Dan Caiello (1646) benefited from an opening miscue by Dan Quigley (1820) to pick up the point and stay in clear second with 3 points. Lendel Robinson (1760) returned to the board and dug deep to claim the point from Shaun McCoy (1398) in a tough endgame.
In the Amateur Section, Jordan Anderson (1252) continued his fine play with a win over quickly improving Jared Whiting (804) to stay in clear first as Akshita Jindal (UNR) claimed the point over Birney Blind (1235) to stay in clear second with 3 points.

After Two Rounds of Ashland XXXIII....
Ten players made it out for Round 2 of Ashland XXXIII. Ben Caiello (2015) finally claimed the point from Dan Quigley (1820) as Dan Caiello (1646) took the point from Gil Holmes (1830).
In the Open Section, Jordan Anderson (1252) scored the win over Akshat Jindal (UNR) as Akshita Jindal (UNR) took the point from Richard Watts (1220) creating a tie for first at 1.5 points. Birney Blind (1235) won over Jared Whiting (804) completing the evening's action.
Another nine players came out to play casually including Expert Dominque Myers from Charlotte who will be helping with the Queen City Chess Master Tour Chess Camps starting the end of this month in Charlotte.
Round 3 is Thursday, June 13. Register/check in with Daniel by 7:15, round starts at 7:30.

Ashland XXXIII is Underway!
Twelve of the Midlands sharpest minds battled in the opening round of Ashland XXXIII. Ben Caiello (2015 ) took care of business on Board 1 defending from Chris Labrecque (1615 ). Dan Quigley (1820 ) took the point from Mike Mayfield (1437) and Dan Caiello (1646) outlasted Daniel Smith (1395) to pick up the point.

Caiello wins Ashland Quick XXXVII !! Smith takes Amateur Quad!
Eight players made it out for Ashland Quick XXXVII with Ben Caiello (1771) winning the Championship Quad with 2.5 points over Dan Quigley (1850) who scored 1.5. Daniel Smith (1181) rolled through the Amateur Quad scoring a perfect 3 points to finish ahead of Jordan Anderson (1224) who finished with 2 points.

Caiello wins Ashland XXXII ! McCoy takes Amateur Section!

Keith Eubanks (2026) finished with a win over Adam Shaw (1808) as Dan Caiello (1639) finally secured the point in a back and forth game with Chris Labrecque (1634).
In the Amateur Section, Shaun McCoy (1362) took the point and clear first from Christian Dunlap with a last round win. Ralph Buske (1367) scored a final round win over Birney Blind (1228) and Jordan Anderson (1272) picked up the point from Jared Whiting (830).
The Under 1400 tournament continues at the Library on Monday, May 13. $2 entry, three round swiss, Game 45, open to new players or anyone rated under 1400. Must be a USCF member to play. Casual play available also for non members.
Ashland Quick XXXVII is Thursday, May 16. Game 20 Quads. Entry fee $10 for club members, $15 for non-members. First place each quad $20, Second $15. Quad may become a Swiss based on the number of entries. Register by 7:15, Round 1 starts at 7:30.

After four rounds - Caiello leads Open! Dunlap leads Amateur!
Sixteen players came out for the Penultimate Round of Ashland XXXII. Ben Caiello (2023) defended board 1 from Keith Eubanks (2054) to move into clear first heading into the final round. Dan Quigley (1801) continues to get his form back picking up the point from Chris Labrecque (1632) and moving into third place. Gil Holmes (1831) took the point from Dan Caiello (1639) as David Boyd (1469) and\ Mike Mayfield (1438) drew, again, for the sixth time in seven meetings!
Christian Dunlap (1066) continued his assault on the Amateur Section, this time defeating Ralph Buske (1341) to stay at the top of the crosstable. Shaun McCoy (1414) scored the win over Richard Watts (1246) to stay in second and set up a show down with Christian in the final round. Steve Rocheleau (UNR) played through an early game miscue to come back and take the point from Jordan Anderson (1171) and Birney Blind (1211) won over Jaime Sanyer (1258).
The Final Round will be Thursday, May 9.

Lewer on top of the Grand Prix Standings after LGP2!!
Sixteen players battled in round two of the Lowry Grand Prix Series and another eight played in a last minute scholastic section.
The very competitive Open Section ended in a three way tie between Randy Mosteller (1846), Dan Quigley (1800) & Gerald Battaglia (1616) , all finishing with 2 points.
The Amateur (U1500) Section saw Josh Lewer (1438) dominate posting a perfect 3-0 score to take clear first and stand alone at the top of the LGP Standings! Daniel Smith (1394) took clear second with 2.5 points as Mike Mayfield (1440) & Ralph Buske (1335) finished with 2 points.
The spur of the moment Scholastic Section was won by Samuel White (714) who posted a perfect 3-0 score! John White (754), Jared Drake (669) & Josie Drake (568) all scored 2 points. The top finishers were awarded gift cards.

Rabulan & Caiello lead after three!! Dunlap on top of Amateur Section!

Anderson wins St Andrews III !!
Jordan Anderson (1171) posted a perfect 3-0 score to win the Under 1400 tournament at the St Andrews Club.Six players competed with Drew Plyler (1180), Guna Yarramareddy (803) and Jared Whiting (780) all tying for second with 1.5 points.

Caiello leads Ashland XXXII! Manion on top in Amateur Section!
Sixteen players crossed swords in the second round of Ashland XXXII. Ben Caiello (2023) took the point from Randall Gingerich (1726) and moved into clear first with two points as Leo Rabulan (2112) was forced to settle peacefully with Keith Eubanks (2054). Dan Quigley (1801) split the point with Daniel Smith (1420) and Chris Labrecque (1632) scored the win over Mike Mayfield (1438).
In the Amateur Section, Andrew Manion ( 1340) continued his strong play with a win over Shaun McCoy (1414) to move into clear first. Ralph Buske (1341) broke into the win column taking the point from Richard Watts (1246) as Christian Dunlap (1066) found the right plan against Jordan Anderson (1171). New club member Steve Rocheleau (UNR) scored a win in his first rated game taking the point from Jared Whiting (780).

Ashland XXXII is underway!
Fourteen players competed in Round 1 of Ashland XXXII. In the Open Section, Leo Rabulan (2112) defended Board 1 from Dan Quigley (1801), a much healthier Keith Eubanks (2054) returned to competition and took the point from Chris Labrecque (1632). James MacDougall (2027) continued his strong play fresh off claiming the Club Championship with a win over Paul Potylicki (1509) and Ben Caiello (2023) somehow survived a vicious attack from Daniel Smith (1420) to claim the point.
In the Amateur Section, Shaun McCoy (1414) scored the win over Jaime Sanyer (1258) as Andrew Manion (1340) picked up the point from Jared Whiting (780). Ralph Buske (1341) settled peacefully with Jordan Anderson (1171) in the evening's only draw.

Checkmate for Charity - April 3 - UPDATED

On Wednesday April 3 at the St Andrews Regional Library club member Klaus Johnson will be playing chess for Harvest Hope. For a $5 donation/board you can play Klaus in a simul. Klaus will be playing up to 12 players at once and it's free for spectators.
You can arrive as early as 5:00pm and play will begin when 10 players are seated or 6:00, whichever comes first. Sets will be provided.
Klaus has been an active member of the club since moving here in 2010 to attend Law School. While his availability to play has been limited because of his studies he has still been very active in the club providing input into promotional ideas and tournament formats to help move chess forward in this area. He has served as TD in some of the area's largest events and organized what we believe to be the first SC Class tournament in 2011. He also managed to gain his Senior TD Certification making him SC's only Sr Director!
Please come out and support Klaus! He has done a lot of work behind the scenes for SC Chess and is a valuable member of the chess community!!

MacDougall wins the 2013 Club Championship!!
James MacDougall (2027) outlasted Randal Gingerich (1726) in a sharp position with time running low for both players to finish in clear first with 4.5 points and win the 2013 Columbia Chess Club Championship!! The Runner Up in 2009 & 2010 took a first round bye, then reeled off four straight wins to claim his first club title in a field of twenty seven!
Ben Caiello (2023) won over Adam Shaw (1817) as Philipp Lamby (2225) defeated Chris Labrecque (1632) and really put the pressure on Board 1 as a draw would have created a four way tie for first! Ben takes home the Runner Up Trophy on tie breaks over Philipp.
Josh Lewer (1411) took the point from Christian Dunlap (1066) to finish with 3.5 points and win the U1605 Trophy on tie breaks over Randall. Christian took home the U1205 Trophy beating out five other eligible players.
Andrew Manion (1340) found the win over Jordan Anderson (1245) and claimed the Top Jr. Trophy finishing with 3.5 points.

MacDougall & Gingerich to play for the Big Trophy!!
Sixteen players continued their quest through round 4 in search of the hardware. James MacDougall (2027) kept his cool as Ben Caiello (2031) pushed for the win and eventually over pushed handing the point and a share of the lead to James. Randall Gingerich (1525) continued his solid play and defeated Adam Shaw (1818) to position himself for a shot at the Club Title when he meets James on Board 1 in the Final Round.

Round 3, A Night of Upsets!!
Eighteen players battled in the Third Round of the Club Championship and ratings didn't mean much as there were three upsets and a draw.
Ben Caiello (2032) took control of Board 1 and stands alone at the top moving a step closer to his first Club Championship with an upset win over Two Time Club Champion Philipp Lamby (2222). James MacDougall (2027) took care of business on Board 2 with a win over Mike Mayfield (1367) and will try to capture Board 1 from Ben in the penultimate round next week. Adam Shaw (1818) won over Christian Dunlap (1047) and will face Randall Gingerich (1525) on Board 2 next week after Randall scored the upset win over Leo Rabulan (2085) in the evening's longest fight.

Three lead after two Rounds of The Championship!
Twenty players competed in Round 2 of the Club Championship. Philipp Lamby (2222) successfully defended Board 1 from Gil Holmes (1832) as Ben Caiello (2032) wore down a stubborn Josh Lewer (1389) to keep pace at the top of the crosstable.
Leo Rabulan (2085) saved the half point in a wild game with Adam Shaw (1818), James MacDougall (2027) picked up the point over Jordan Anderson (1245), Randall Gingerich (1525) took the point from Ralph Buske (1430) and Christian Dunlap (1047) secured the point from Julie Sheil (1058) to round out five players tied at 1.5 points.
Chris Labrecque (1667) broke into the win column with a victory over James Price (1246). Daniel Smith (1476) scored over Andrew Manion (1326), Birney Blind (1242) won over Guna Yarramareddy (780) and James Doyle (1136) settled peacefully with Mark Woodman (1026).
Round 3 is Thursday, March 7.

Manion & Davis tie for first in the Library Tournament!
Nine players competed in the second U1200 tournament at the St. Andrews Regional Library. Andrew Manion (1190) survived a wild finish to take the point from Jerry Davis (727) and tie for first with 3 points in the four round tournament. Jordan Anderson (1156) scored a final round win over Jared Whiting (833) as did Jose Escobar (UNR) who defeated Guna Yarramareddy (766).

There will be casual play available at the library through March. We plan to do another four round tournament in April. Check back for details.

Good start for the Lowry Grand Prix Series!
Twenty six players competed in the Lowry Grand Prix #1 this past Saturday. The Open Section was stronger than expected with five of the twelve competitors rated 2000+. Philipp Lamby (2222) & Leo Rabulan (2085) tied for first with 2.5 points. Ben Caiello (2032), Randy Mosteller (1816) & Nick Petersen (1737) all finished with 2 points.
The Amateur Section (U1505) had fourteen players battling and when the dust settled Josh Lewer (1389) & Mike Mayfield (1367) both managed to post perfect 3-0 scores! David Boyd (1485), Andrew Manion (1326) & James Baxley (883) all scored 2 points.

Club Championship is Underway!!
Twenty players began their quest for the big trophy in Round 1 of the Club Championship. While there were no upsets in the opening round most of the games were tough, lengthy battles.
Philipp Lamby (2222) is seeking his third Club Title and survived a stiff test from Dan Quigley (1807) in the evening's longest game. New club member Leo Rabulan (2085) scored the win over Lendel Robinson (1765) on Board 2. The games from Boards 1 & 2 can be viewed HERE. We plan to have the live broadcast running for Round 2.
Co-State Champion Ben Caiello (2032) who is seeking his first Club Championship, brought home the point from Chris Labrecque (1667) as Gil Holmes (1832) picked up the point from Daniel Smith (1476) and Adam Shaw (1818) scored over Ralph Buske (1430) to round out the top half of the field.
Josh Lewer (1389) was able to solve the problems thrown at him by Birney Blind (1242) to pick up the point and lead the lower half of the field. Mike Mayfield (1367) took advantage of an opening miscue by James Doyle (1136) to grab a quick point, James Price (1246) successfully returned to the board with a win over Guna Yarramareddy (780) and Jordan Anderson (1245) joined the list of first round winners scoring the point over an improving Jose Escobar (UNR). Andrew Manion (1326) avoided being upset by Christian Dunlap (1047) in this round's only draw.
Round 2 is Thursday, Feb 28. Register or check in by 7:15!!!!
The first Lowry Grand Prix is this Sat, Feb 23. Around a dozen players have pre registered so there should be a pretty good turnout to start the series!
The Final Round of the U1200 Library Tournament is Monday, Feb 25.

Davis leads into Final Round at Library Tournament!
Eight players compete in the Penultimate Round of the U1200 Tournament with another six playing casually. Jerry Davis (727) won over Kyle Lober (UNR) to stay undefeated and at the top of the crosstable heading into the final round. Andrew Manion (1190) took the point from Jared Whiting (833) to move into clear second with a chance to tie for first in the final round. Jordan Anderson (1156) scored the win over new member Guna Yarramareddy (786) and Jonathan Lober (UNR) broke into the win column with a victory over Rod Franco (566).
The Final Round is Monday, Feb 25.
There will be another Beginner's Tournament for U1200 players in April, check back for details.
The Club Championship begins this Thursday, Feb 21 and the First Lowry Grand Prix is this Sat, Feb 23.

Casual Night
Over a dozen players came out for some stress free chess tonight. The usual blitz & bughouse battles were contested and Edsel Pena, Cody Kyzer and Philip Lamby stopped by to get in some play ahead of the Club Championship that begins next week.
The Snowstorm Special is THIS weekend in Summerville! Check the Charleston Chess Club site for full details.
The Club Championship begins next week! Here are the details:
Five round Swiss. One round a week for five weeks. Club members only, can join on site.
Entry fee $10 ($2/rd if joining in late). One bye allowed, No last round byes. Register/check in by 7:15 to be paired each week!! Rounds start at 7:30.
Open Section only, Game 75 +30s incr. Accelerated Pairings will be used. Trophies to 1st, 2nd, Top U1605 and Top Jr. Trophy winners also receive 1yr club membership. Based on participation, a Top U1200 or Top Unrated trophy may be added.
We plan to broadcast boards 1 & 2 live. Link will be available on Home Page next to Crosstable link.
The first of the Lowry Grand Prix Series is on Sat, Feb 23. Prizes will be awarded based on points accumulated over the six tournaments. A good start early could put you in position to challenge for first later in the series. Don't miss this first one!
