Club Championship starts this week!

Fourteen players came out for Casual Night and learned about the K+p on the 7th vs K+Q. After the fine presentation by Daniel Smith a double round robin blitz tournament broke out with Kyle Oody (1858) taking the top quad by .5 point over Paul King (1805). Ron Tims (1376) rolled through the swiss quad scoring 5 out of six to edge out Shiva Balasubramanian (1012) by a .5 point. A second blitz quad was played and Paul King (1805) tied for first with Joerg Lohse (1665), half a point ahead of Keith Eubanks (1980).

The Club Championship begins on March 4. Here are the details:

Five round Swiss. One round a week for five weeks. Club members only, can join on site.

Entry fee $10 ($2/rd). One bye allowed, No last round byes, No free entries. Rounds start at 7:30.

Open Section only, Game 90. Accelerated Pairings will be used. Trophies to 1st, 2nd, Top U1600 and Top Jr. player. Trophy winners also receive 1yr club membership.

NO CASH PRIZES this tournament.

Based on first round attendance an Unrated trophy OR an U1200 trophy may be added to the awards.

Our match with Queen City Chess will be May 15 at Ashland United Methodist Church, home field advantage! Our roster is full. If QCCA has more than 10 players we will expand the roster. The QCCA team can be found HERE.

The Polgar - Kaidanov match ended tied at 2-2, White won all the games??! Judit won with Black in the Armageddon playoff after they were still tied after two blitz games. The full results, pictures and video can be found HERE.

Polgar Evens the Match at 1-1

Judit bounced back in the second game to even the match at 1-1. White has won the first two games but today is the Najdorf :) , Kaidanov has the white pieces.

Kaidanov takes Game 1

GM Kaidanov wins the first game with the White pieces. Be sure to check out the game as he sacked a Knight for two pawns on move 13. Hope the rest of the games are this exciting!

Polgar - Kaidanov This Week



The match is being held here in South Carolina this week. Sicilian Theme Match (Dragon, Scheveningen, Najdorf or Sveshnikov), GM Judit Polgar vs GM Gregory Kaidanov, 4 Classical 100 min /40 move games, Possible Blitz playoff.

The games start at 2:00 each day and can be viewed at the Monroi site.

Ashland Quick XVI and other notes

Fourteen players compete in Ashland Quick XVI with Donny Gray (2036) and Keith Eubanks (1987) tying for first ahead of Philipp Lamby (2132) and Steve Boshears (1625) in the Championship Quad. Mike Mayfield (1499) continued his impressive play taking clear first in the Candidates Quad ahead of Adam Shaw (1417), George Morton (1471) and Erik Murrah (1389). The final section was a six player swiss with Ralph Buske (1063) taking clear first ahead of Paul Lowry (1162) and Richard Watts (1090) who tied for 2nd.

One of these is a win for White the other is a Draw. Find out this week on Casual Night. Come out for some "Stress Free" chess. Daniel Smith and Erik Murrah have a couple presentations. Check the previous post for details. Both will be very interesting to class players, and even to players that have no class!

The first Club Awards Standings have been posted. The rules for the Awards can be found HERE. Take note to how the Player of the Year is decided. The rules have changed so ANYONE regardless of rating can win POY with a consistent, solid performance.

The Club's Jr. players continue to roll through the SC Scholastic Grand Prix Series as Ben Caiello continued his domination with a 4-0 performance in the fifth round of the series today. Dan Caiello finished tied for 2nd with Tommy Leonardi from Spartanburg in what is fast becoming a three way battle for the top spot in the State. Hot on their heals is one of our youngest club members, Chris Aluri, who went a perfect 4-0 in the K-5 section of today's Grand Prix.

The Club Match with Queen City Chess has been scheduled for May 15 here in Columbia. The site will be announced soon. Players that came out last Thursday were given first right of refusal to play, and no one refused! All ten spots have been filled! We'll try and expand to include some more players.

Ashland XIII Concludes

Thirty two players compete in Ashland XIII with Keith Eubanks (2006) finishing in clear first! Joerg Lohse (1847) defeated George Morton (1654) to finish in second and Robert Folts (1685) scored the win over Steve Boshears to split the U1800 prize with Erik Murrah (1643).


In the Amateur Section there was a log jam at the top as Ralph Buske (1402) defeated Craig Patton (1136) and Birney Blind (1160) took the point from Ben Caiello (1365) to join Mike Mayfield (1391) in a three-way tie for first. Ben Caiello (1365) took home the U1400 prize. Drew Plyler (1246) scored a last round win over Mike Meekins (1102) and Daniel Smith (1121) escaped with a draw against Cody Kyzer (933) in the sections other games.

Dan Caiello (1072) defeated Rod Lytes (234) as Shiva Balasubramanian (1003) won over Marty Anderson (775) to tie for first in the Reserve Section. Christian Dunlap (770) defeated Erik Anderson (467) to claim the U1000 prize.

Ashland XIII - Round 4

Twenty players battle in the Penultimate Round of Ashland XIII. Keith Eubanks (2006) took control of the Open Section with a win over Joerg Lohse (1847) Erik Murrah (1643) outlasted George Morton (1654) and Steve Boshears (1634) took the point from Adam Shaw (1515).

Mike Mayfield (1391) defeated co leader Craig Patton (1136) to move into clear first in the Amateur Section. Ben Caiello (1365) scored the win over Cody Kyzer (933) to move into second and Ralph Buske (1402) settled peacefully with Birney Blind (1160). Richard Watts (1253) won over David Gongre (1003)

In the Reserve Section, Shiva Balasubramanian (1003) took down leader Dan Caiello (1072) to create a tie at the top going into the final round. Marty Anderson (775) was victorious over Christian Dunlap (770) and Rod Lytes (234) won over Erik Anderson (467)

The Final Round is Thursday, Feb 11.
