New Year & Ashland XXXI Underway!

Sixteen of sharpest minds from the Midlands and beyond came out to battle in the first round of the New Year as the Columbia Chess Club kicks off its sixth year!

In the Open Section, Ben Caiello (2032) picked up where he left off last year scoring the win over Dan Quigley (1807). Adam Shaw (1818) found the win over a tough defending Paul Potylicki (1494), Lendel Robinson (1756) scored the win over Mike Mayfield (1367) and Dan Caiello (1613) stopped by to upset Gil Holmes (1832) before he heads back to school.

The Amateur Section looks to be extremely competitive as Jaime Sanyer (1168) scored an upset win over Ralph Buske (1430). Max Witherell (1280) took care of business against Christian Dunlap (1047), Birney Blind (1242) accepted a peaceful ending with Zebulon Griggs (962) and Josh Lewer (1241) couldn't find a way to secure the win having to split the point with Jerry Davis (UNR).

Round 2 is Thursday, Jan 10.

The St Andrews club meets on Monday at the library. Come by for casual play!
