Border Battle Round 2


After Round 2 SC is down by a point 12.5 to 11.5.  Congrats to class c players Shaun MCCOY and Mike Boone for each going.  In the Champions match Christensen holds a tough draw vs Mabe.

Ashland XLIV Round 1

Ten intrepid players kicked off round 1 for Ashland XLIV.

In the top section, Ian Bell and Sam Copeland played a fascinating game. In the end, a slight miscue led the game to a draw. Rade Musulin continued his impressive play to claim the point against strong competitor Dan Quigley. Adam Shaw dispatched Mike Mayfield to jump into a tie for the lead.


 In the U1505 section, Marty Anderson continued his long game winning streak this time Ed Stewart succumbed to his attack. Richard Watts impressively ground out the win against a hard fighter in Mark Woodman.

Round 2 continues the tourney on June 4th.  Email, call or text me to be included in the tourney.

Ashland Quick XLVII, Ashland XLIII Results

There was a good turnout for Ashland Quick XLVII with fourteen players participating and six more playing casual and kibitzing.

In the Top Section, Keith Eubanks ran the gauntlet with a perfect 3-0 score.  Rade Musulin continued his impressive play only succumbing to Mr. Eubanks.

In the Middle section, Ian Bell claimed first with a perfect 3-0 and a log jam ensued fro second with Mike Mayfield, Richard Watts, and Ed Stewart all claiming 1 point each.

Six players were in the final swiss section.  Newcomers to the club Tal Kasher and Martin Caluag each shared first with 2 points each and relatively newcomer Mike Miller claimed 1.5 points.

In round 5 of Ashland XLIII, which concluded the tournament, Sam Copeland(2288) defeated Gil Holmes(1750) to claims first with 4.5 points.

Keith Eubanks(2059) defeated Adam Shaw(1804) to move into sole second place.

Dan Quigley(1789) returned to his club and defeated Ian Bell(1875).

In the U1505 section, Marty Anderson defeated Mark Woodman to move to 5-0 improving his rating by over 200 points and jumping above 1400!

On May 28th starts Ashland XLIV which is a 5 round tournament which will run through June 25th.

May 30-31st is the SC vs NC border battle in Charlotte, NC.  If you are interested and have not let me know please do so.

Ashland XLIII Round 3 and other news

Reminder on Monday May 4th GM Ben Finegold will be visiting Columbia, South Carolina to educate with a Chess Lecture and then play all comers in a simultaneous exhibition.  The lecture will begin at 7pm at the North Trenholm Baptist Church.  $15 per attendee covers the lecture and the simul.  Sign up online at http://strategerycg.com/tournaments.html


Sixteen players turned out for Round 3 of Ashland XLIII.

Sam Copeland defeated Ben Caiello to move to 2.5 points.
Ian Bell defeated Keith Eubanks.  Brandon Jordan defeated Daniel Smith in an exciting finish and Gil Holmes claimed the point from Shaun McCoy.

In the U1505 section Marty Anderson defeated Mike Mayfield to move to 2 points.
Jared Whiting defeated Birney Blind.  Richard Watts defeated Mark Woodman and newcomer Michael Miller defeated Chad Davis.

Round 4 continues on May 7th.
